i bought this item for my son, thinking he could take it when he travels. however, it was too big and heavy and i had to return it. he said if it also faxed and copied, it might be worth packing, but not for just a printer. i’m sure it’s a nice home printer, but just didn’t fill his needs.

My printer arrived, minus two critical components: 1) no usb cable–nice if manufacturer told me–I could have at least ordered one right away, and 2) no color ink cartridge. Printer doesn’t work without it (obviously). So here I sit. Easier just to go to Best Buy and purchase one than to screw around with Amazon or Canon. I’m very displeased with the unnecessary hassles.

The unit is a great size and I like its size. However the installation was a nightmare and I eventualy gave up. If it takes this much energy to install the soft ware it makes me nervous for the future computer conflicts. Also I was disapointed that the unit did not come with a USB cord to attach the printer to the computer

I bought the Pixma to replace my old BJC-85, when it finally gave the “8 beeps of death” after years of faithful service. This Pixma is a great looking machine and the printouts look good. It might actually rate more than 3 stars, but I haven’t had it very long, and it has some mighty big shoes to fill as a replacement for the 85. Make that smaller shoes, because the BJC-85 was a bit smaller, and fit just right into my computer carry case. But the Pixma is sleek and compact, and fits into my carry case with my laptop and both power supplies. Another nice feature the 85 had was an alternate print head that held one large black ink cartridge, instead of small color and black cartridges. If you didn’t need color, it provided a longer lasting ink supply. I haven’t seen that for the Pixma yet, and I don’t know how long the small ink cartridges will last. I bought the BJS-85 from a friend for $100 about 5 or 6 years ago, for a very specific purpose, and it filled the bill perfectly. I guess this is less of a review of the Pixma than a nostalgia piece about my old BJC-85. I don’t have a lot of experience with the Pixma yet, but it looks great, and prints cleanly and quickly. It probably prints a lot better than I need. It seems quieter than the 85 too.
